Scaling up FanDuel
We’re thrilled that activity on FanDuel is increasing. We had a record breaking week last week for new signups and entries, and with the FFFC Final nearly upon us (only 9 days to go!) and basketball season in full swing things are very much on the up. We are also excited about longer term growth opportunities through new partnerships and product developments.
To cope with this growth we’ve been heavily investing time and resources in fundamental changes to the site to help it scale better. I wanted to keep you in the loop with what’s going on.
- About a month ago, we had issues at NFL game start where scoring wouldn’t show up for a while after game start. This was due to a database bottleneck. We’ve re-architected and achieved a great speed up – those of you online at NFL game start last Sunday will have seen it go almost instantly.
- Web server capacity has been an issue and resulted in slow load times. We are now in a position to utilize web servers in the cloud, and this weekend will have 3x the server capacity we had available last weekend. This should mean faster load times and more frequent live scoring updates for everyone.
- Longer term, we are scaling up our development and operations team to provide even more robust and scalable delivery of the site.
Re-architecting a live site like this has been likened to redesigning the plane whilst in flight, and given the real-time, real-money, peak-time nature of the site, it’s a hard problem. That’s no excuse though, and we’re determined to tackle the serious issue of scaling while minimizing disruption to the existing service. We have engineers working six or seven days a week on it. However, if you do experience issues despite our best efforts please report them via our contact form (Contact link in the site footer) or email firstname.lastname@example.org and our customer service staff will deal with your problem as fast as we can.
We are committed to building the best daily draft site there is, and care enormously about maintaining high standards of quality for our players. Rest assured we are continuing to invest heavily in scalability, so we’re in great shape to cope with the influx of new players we expect over the coming months.
I’ll keep you up to date with further developments via this blog. For now, good luck with your weekend line-ups!
